    1. Zermatt

Where in Switzerland: Southern Region (Valais)
Best for: Couples looking for classic mountain views, ski lovers, photographers, and first-time Swiss Alps visitors wanting โ€œpostcardโ€ scenery.
What activities I recommend: Hiking near the Matterhorn, skiing, paragliding, and hopping on the Gornergrat railway

Zermatt is arguably the most iconic Swiss Alps town, with the sharp triangular peak of the Matterhorn looming over the village, charming car-free streets, and a classic alpine environment.

The villageโ€™s charming car-free streets are lined with rustic wooden chalets and delicious restaurants. I highly recommend stopping in at Grampi’s Bar & Restaurant for one of the best gluten-free pizzas!

In the winter, ski the epic slopes and finish off the day with a lively aprรจs-ski scene where skiers gather for drinks and laughter.

Whether summer or winter, it offers serious mountain vibes: from skiing and snowboarding to hiking, glacier tours, and scenic cable-car rides.

    Where to stay in Zermatt:

    Luxury: CERVO Mountain Resort
    Boutique: Hotel Post
    Mid-Range/lively: Hotel Bellerive

The Matterhorn is one of the most iconic mountains in all of Europe. Located out of Zermatt, one of the most magical Swiss Alps cities, is the mountain that stands tall and is the perfect backdrop of the town.

    2. Interlaken

Where in Switzerland: Central Switzerland (Bernese Oberland)
Best for: Travelers who want flexibility, easy transport, a variety of adventure/activity options, and a central base for day trips.
What activities I recommend: Skydiving, swimming in Lake Thun, canyoning, hiking, visiting Harder Kulm, and paragliding

Interlaken sits between two lakes, surrounded by mountains, a perfect combination of town convenience and alpine access. Itโ€™s more accessible than many smaller villages and acts as a central hub for day trips (mountains, lakes, adventure sports).

Before starting your day, I recommend stopping in at Velo Cafe for a vanilla latte and sitting in their comfy, eclectic chairs. And then:

    • Thrill Seekers: Take in the stunning views as you paraglide above the turquoise waters and among some of the most epic mountain ranges.
    • Relaxation Seekers: Hop on a scenic train to hidden mountain villages, or wander along the lakeside paths that invite you to explore every corner.

Interlaken is hands down one of my favorite places in Switzerland and the world. The vibe when you step off the train feels alive and also relaxing. There are many options for all types of travelers, whether that’s activities, accommodations, or dining.

I loved the diversity of this city, with all of the families, backpackers, and couples who choose Interlaken for flexibility.

    Where to Stay in Interlaken:

    Luxury: Victoria-Jungfrau Spa
    Mid-range: Hotel Interlaken
Budget/Hostel: Balmer’s Hostel (the best hostel I’ve ever stayed at)

Balmer's Hostel in Interlaken, Switzerland is a great place for visitors to stay for an affordable and fun option.

    3. Wengen

Where in Switzerland: Central Switzerland (Bernese Oberland)
Best for: Travelers seeking peace, classic alpine village vibe, couples, families, and anyone wanting to escape big-tourist intensity.
What activities I recommend: Hiking, skiing, and hopping on the Cogwheel to Jungfraujoch

Wengen is a hidden gem up in the mountains, sitting high above the Lauterbrunnen Valley with views that seem to go on forever. This is another car-free town where you can enjoy being present and even hear the sounds of cowbells ringing from the hills.

Wengen is a paradise for outdoor lovers with access to some of the best hiking and skiing in the region. It’s the perfect place to hit the trails with the famous peaks of Eiger, Mรถnch, and Jungfrau towering around you.

Start your morning with a stroll through the village and purchase tickets in advance for the Luftseilbahn Wengen-Mannlichen Cable Car. When you arrive at the top, you can hike the Royal Walk and grab a snack or drink at the restaurant afterwards

    Where to Stay in Wengen:

Luxury: Beausite Park Hotel & Spa
    Boutique: Hotel Regina
    Mid-range: Hotel Jungfraublick

A bird eye view of Wengen from a hill top looking down on the town.

    4. St. Moritz

Where in Switzerland: South-Eastern Switzerland (Upper Engadine)
Best for: Luxury seekers, couples celebrating something special, travelers wanting quality, comfort, and alpine glamour.
What activities I recommend: Skiing, summer hiking, shopping, and winter sports

Located near a sparkling lake and surrounded by towering Alps, this resort town has a unique flair. St. Moritz is renowned as a luxury ski destination in the Swiss Alps, attracting visitors with its world-class slopes and glamorous atmosphere.

Known for world-class skiing and winter sports, it attracts both thrill-seekers and those looking to relax in style. You can stroll along the picturesque lakeside promenade or indulge in upscale dining and shopping while taking in breathtaking mountain views.

For my fellow foodies and cheese lovers, I highly recommend visiting La Stalla Ristorante & Pizzeria for some amazing cheese fondue. It’s so good that you might even decide to go back a couple more times!

St. Moritz is the go-to for luxury travel in the Alps: upscale hotels, fine dining, a chic vibe, and a winter-sports lifestyle with refinement and glamor.

    5. Davos

Where in Switzerland: Eastern Switzerland (Graubรผnden)
Best for: Winter-sports travelers, mountain bikers, adventure lovers, groups of friends, and anyone who prefers a lively alpine town with modern conveniences rather than a tiny mountain village.
What activities I recommend: Mountain biking, skiing, paragliding, and exploring the shops & nightlife

Davos is one of the highest towns in Europe and is known for its excellent skiing, long winter season, and big-town conveniences you wonโ€™t find in smaller alpine villages.

Itโ€™s a great choice if you want a mix of outdoor activities and a more urban atmosphere with plenty of shops, restaurants, and events. There is easy access to outdoor activities year-round, making this Swiss Alp city a great place to visit.

I will admit that Davos has less of a “storybook alpine village” charm than places like Wengen or Murren, but I believe that’s what makes this city more unique. Davos has this magnetic energy, blending adventure, culture, and relaxation in a way that makes every visit feel fresh and exciting.

P.S. If you visit in the summer, bring your bathing suit and go swimming in Lake Davos. It’s a lovely spot and a great place for a picnic!

    Where to Stay in Davos:

Luxury: Ameron Davos Swiss Mountain Resort
    Mid-range: Alpine Inn
    Affordable: Studio 54

    6. Murren

Where in Switzerland: South-Central Switzerland (Bernese Oberland)
Best for: Hikers, couples, solo travelers, or anyone looking for quiet mountain scenery and an authentic alpine village experience.
What activities I recommend: Hiking, Shilthorn Piz Gloria, Helicopter Tour to the Swiss Alps

Mรผrren looks and feels like a postcard that has come to life. The fresh mountain air, breathtaking views of the famous Eiger and Jungfrau mountains, traditional chalets, and alpine charm will make you fall in love with this Swiss Alps city.

This tiny, car-free village is known for offering a slower pace that has easy access to hiking trails, without the crowds.

There is skiing nearby that is perfect for the winter, or snowshoeing if you like something a little quieter. I recommend visiting one of the local cafes afterward for some homemade sweet treats.

Staying in Mรผrren means waking to the sound of silence, surrounded by stunning landscapes that inspire a deep connection to nature.

    Where to Stay in Murren:

    Luxury: Hotel Alpina
    Boutique: Hotel Regina
    Mid-Range: Eiger Guesthouse

    7. Grindelwald

Where in Switzerland: Central Switzerland (Berner Oberland)
Best for: Hikers, couples/friends wanting mountain trails and scenic stays, mid-range/backpacker budgets, summer travelers.
What activities I recommend: Hiking, mountain trails, skiing nearby

Grindelwald is one of the most popular villages in the Jungfrau region, known for its dramatic mountain scenery, endless hiking trails, adventure activities, and easy access to First, Eiger Glacier, and Jungfraujoch.

Itโ€™s the perfect base if you want a lively alpine town with lots to do in both summer and winter. Summer offers endless hiking, gondola rides, and activities like the First Cliff Walk or mountain carts. In the winter, you’ll find epic skiing, snowboarding, and sledding.

The village has a youthful, outdoorsy energy with lots of cafes, shops, and tour options.

    Where to Stay in Grindelwald:

    Luxury: Hotel Fiescherblick
    Boutique: Bergwelt
    Mid-range: Hotel Alpenblick

    8. Lauterbrunnen

Where in Switzerland: West-Central Switzerland (Canton of Bern)
Best for: Nature lovers, budget-minded travelers, hikers, photographers, anyone wanting peaceful alpine energy rather than glitz.
What activities I recommend: Hiking, walking to the waterfalls, Cable Car to Mannlichen, and a Grindelwald-Scheidegg-Lauterbrunnen Small Group Tour

Lauterbrunnen is one of those places that almost doesnโ€™t feel real. Surrounded by steep cliffs and more than 70 waterfalls, the whole valley has this peaceful, storybook atmosphere thatโ€™s impossible not to fall in love with.

Itโ€™s the kind of place where you can hear waterfalls echoing in the distance, watch paragliders drift through the sky, and wander past curious cows along quiet alpine paths, all in the same afternoon.

Itโ€™s also an ideal base for exploring nearby mountain villages like Wengen and Mรผrren. In summer, the valley is green and full of rushing waterfalls; spring brings dramatic snowmelt; and winter is calm, snowy, and beautifully quiet.

No matter when you visit, Lauterbrunnen feels timeless in the best way.

    Where to Stay in Lauterbrunnen:

Luxury: Beausite Park Hotel & Spa
    Mid-range: Charming Penthouse

    9. Saas-Fee

Where in Switzerland: Southern Switzerland (Canton of Valais)
Best for: Budget-minded skiers, travelers wanting calm but mountain access, nature lovers, and those who donโ€™t need luxury.
What activities I recommend: Glacier skiing, hiking, and tobogganing

Saas-Fee is such an underrated gem in the Swiss Alps. It sits in this gorgeous little valley surrounded by huge 4,000-meter peaks, and the whole place just feels peaceful and tucked away.

You wake up to insane mountain views, and your day can go in pretty much any direction: hiking, skiing, wandering around the village, or just soaking it all in.

In winter, Saas-Fee becomes a super fun ski base, with plenty of slopes, winter hiking trails, and even glacier skiing. When summer rolls around, the whole area opens up for hiking, biking, and easy alpine walks โ€” plus the Feeblitz toboggan run, which is always a good time.

The village itself has a really laid-back vibe โ€” wooden chalets, quiet streets, and that โ€œslow travelโ€ feeling where you can actually relax instead of rushing everywhere. Itโ€™s way calmer than the big resorts, which honestly makes it feel even more special.

If youโ€™re in the mood for something a little more adventurous, you can cross the Gorge Alpin with a guide or try the adventure forest full of suspension bridges and ropes. And after a full day outside, Saas-Fee has cozy bars, good food, and even a torchlit village walk that feels straight out of a winter movie.

    Where to Stay in Saas-Fee

    Luxury: Elite Alpine Lodge
    Mid-Range: Hotel Les Amis
