Is Zurich Safe? What You Need to Know & Tips

Many travelers love to visit Zurich, the largest city in Switzerland. Since it’s a big city, travelers may have safety concerns. So, is Zurich safe? Let’s find out!
Switzerland is hands down one of my favorite countries to visit for many reasons. The Swiss Alps take your breath away, the food is delicious, the cities are clean, the people are friendly, and transportation is reliable.
Growing up in a rural area, living in big cities, moving across the country, and traveling both internationally and within the U.S. have all made safety a top priority for me.
That’s why, before any trip, I always research which countries and cities are worth visiting—and, more importantly, where I’ll feel safe. In this guide, we’ll break down key safety factors in Zurich to help you decide if this city is the right fit for you.

Is Zurich Safe?
Zurich is not only one of Switzerland’s biggest cities but also one of its safest. With low crime rates and a reputation for being clean, well-organized, and easy to navigate, it’s a great destination for travelers who prioritize safety.
Like any city, it’s still important to stay aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas or at night.
1. Safety at Night
Crime rates are low, and most incidents involve petty crimes like pickpocketing. It’s always good to stay aware of your surroundings, just as you would in any other city. Avoid poorly lit areas, especially at night.
You’ll find plenty of people out and about in the evenings, whether grabbing dinner or unwinding with drinks after a day of exploring. Just be extra mindful in busy bar areas and late at night to stay on the safe side.
2. Transportation in Zurich
Getting around Zurich is safe, efficient, and straightforward. The city’s public transport—trams, buses, and trains—is reliable and widely used by both locals and visitors.
Zurich Airport is just a short train ride from the city center, making arrivals and departures seamless. While public transport is the best way to explore, renting a car can be a good option if you plan to venture into the Swiss countryside —just keep in mind that parking in the city can be tricky. If you’re considering a rental, you can check out options here.

3. Ettiqutte in Zurich
Zurich has a laid-back but polite culture, so a little etiquette goes a long way. Tipping isn’t expected, but rounding up or leaving 5-10% for good service is appreciated.
When exploring nature, stay on marked trails and pack out your trash—locals take outdoor preservation seriously. In the city, be mindful of noise, especially on public transport and in residential areas.
A simple “Grüezi” (hello) is a nice way to greet locals, and giving people personal space is the norm. Overall, just be respectful, and you’ll fit right in.
4. Petty Crimes
Petty crime in Zurich isn’t a huge concern, but like any major city, it’s still something to be aware of. Pickpocketing can happen, especially in busy areas like train stations, tourist spots, and trams during peak hours.
It’s nothing extreme—just the usual “keep your bag zipped and don’t leave your phone sitting on a café table” kind of stuff. As long as you stay aware of your surroundings and use common sense, you’re unlikely to run into any issues.
5. Safe Accommodations
Most hotels in Zurich are safe, but these are my top picks for travelers looking for an extra secure stay:
✔️ Best Quirky & Fun Option: Zurich Swiss Chocolate Hotel by Fassbind
✔️ Best Budget Option: Hotel Adler Zürich
✔️ Bext Luxury Option: The Dolder Grand

6. Solo Female Traveler Safety
Zurich is a safe and hassle-free city for solo female travelers. Walking alone, even at night, is generally low-risk, and public transport is reliable and secure.
Harassment is rare, but it’s always smart to stay aware and avoid isolated areas late at night. Overall, it’s one of the better cities for women traveling alone.
